Nurse midwives may travel long distances to help care for patients in places where there are not enough healthcare workers. Their work can be both physically and emotionally demanding as many spend much of the day on their feet. The work can be stressful as they make critical decisions that affect a patient's health. Nurse Midwives can come in close contact with infectious diseases and must follow strict, standardized guidelines to guard against diseases and other dangers. Most nurse midwives work full time, often in shift work which can include nights, weekends and holidays to provide round-the-clock patient care.
