Nursing assistants typically work indoors in a climate-controlled environment and spend much of their workday standing or walking. They are in almost constant contact with others, often physically close to people. Communicating clearly is essential to patients' health and their work team's effectiveness. Exposed to people who have infections and diseases, nursing assistants need to wear protective equipment such as masks and disposable gloves to protect their own and their patients' health. About half of them work full time and half part time. Since they usually work in 24-hour a day facilities, their schedules may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
