Machinery maintenance workers work indoors, but their work spaces may not have climate control. Noise levels are commonly distracting or uncomfortable. Workers are exposed to hazardous equipment sometimes, and exposure to contaminated materials is common. To remain healthy, they must wear protective or safety equipment. Workers in this setting may experience extreme temperatures. On a typical workday, workers often use their hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls. These workers at times must make decisions and have a moderate amount of freedom to do so. They may experience stress in this job due to time pressure. Many machinery maintenance workers work full time.

Usually one or two years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers - an apprenticeship may be available.
