Computer numerically controlled tool oeprators operate powerful, high-speed machines that can be dangerous, so they must observe safety rules. They typically work in indoor, climate-controlled environments, but they wear protective or safety equipment to prevent injury from machines and from contaminants that they may be exposed to. Their work environments tend to be noisy, which can be distracting or uncomfortable. Accuracy is very important in this occupation. Most work full time during regular business hours. Overtime is common, and because many manufacturers run their machinery for many hours a day, evening and weekend work is not unusual.

Usually one or two years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers - an apprenticeship may be available.
