Some wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives have large territories and travel considerably. They spend a lot of time using the phone, email, and other electronic communication devices. Because their income and job security often depend on how much merchandise they sell and since they need to meet companies sales goals, workers in this occupation can be under considerable stress. Most wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives work full time. Sales calls occur during regular working hours, so they do much of their planning and paperwork in the evening and on weekends. Although their hours are often irregular, many sales representatives may determine their own schedules.

A considerable amount of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed.

Usually several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.
